The Liberal Cup Public House & Brewery in Hallowell, ME, is our take on the traditional English pub. Our mission is to provide a gathering place for our local friends and seasonal visitors to enjoy good food and drink.
Like the pubs that dot the English countryside, The Liberal Cup is an inviting and cozy spot to bring family and friends. And while the draughts will conjure that familiar flavor of jolly ol’ England (ales and bitters being our specialty), we’re happy to brag that the food will not.
Our award-winning chef has taken classic pub fare and elevated it with fresh, local ingredients. His daily specials highlight Maine's seasonal offerings and on the weekends he likes to turn The Cup into a gastropub with his haute and nouvelle cuisine creations.
I opened The Liberal Cup in 2000, realizing a life-long dream of establishing a traditional English pub on this side of the Atlantic. At the impressionable age of 17, I had fallen in love with the English country pub--a place for families and friends to gather for all occasions, as well as a local watering hole for those out and about or on their way home. English pubs are cozy, informal, and meant for all to enjoy. I hope that is what you’ll experience when you walk through our door. It’s certainly cheaper than a trip to England, and the food is better. I promise. As for the beers I brew, although I love experimentation, I keep them all within the English tradition: drinkable, affordable, and for the people. So, please, come and sit for a spell, share a story and laugh, and just enjoy yourselves.

An Amazing Menu
Whether you're looking for a snack, a fresh & light lunch, or a hearty and comforting meal, you'll find something memorable to satisfy your craving. Our menu hasn't changed much since our opening; our regulars won't allow it. One time with the Fish & Chips, Drunken Pot Roast, or Not Your Momma's Meatloaf, and you'll know why.
Our brews are produced in the English tradition: pleasing, delicious, and affordable. We brew various ales (ambers, IPAs, porters, stouts) and lagers in 200-gallon batches twice a week just yards away from the taps, giving you the finest experience of a centuries-old craft.
On Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, the pub swings with great live music provided by top area musicians. Grab some friends and test your combined brains on Tuesdays with Trivia Night. Check us out on Facebook to follow where else we're pouring The Liberal Cup brews at special events and festivals.
